A shelf of possibilities: The Königstraße 1ab
The Königstrasse 1ab building opposite the main railway station is the identity-forming prelude to the most important shopping street and the entrance to the city of Stuttgart. In a central urban location, Königstrasse 1ab will be a landmark, a successful example of the re-use of the existing building, an inviting, forward-looking building, a place of encounter and exchange. The horizontal façade structure, similar to an open shelving system, offers a platform for a wide variety of uses and functions with opening and cross-storey levels.
The façade design reflects openness, transparency and the identity of the location. Projections and recesses in the façade make reference to the surrounding buildings and create high-quality balconies and terraces with views of the palace gardens and the redesigned main railway station. In terms of its staggered heights, the building fits in with the planned design of Königstrasse 1c. References are also created to the urban design element of the widely projecting base storey of the Schlossgarten Hotel on the north-east side.
Königstrasse 1ab will also set an example for the conversion and subsequent utilisation of existing buildings. The careful and thoughtful use of our existing resources is the key to a building culture that becomes a model by means of cleverly constructed buildings and regionally differentiated materials and construction methods.
The building at Königstrasse 1ab can serve as an example of the building turnaround, of resource-conserving and circular construction.
Based on the existing load-bearing structure up to the ceiling above the first floor, a concept was developed that represents an identity-creating and contemporary approach to the existing building while minimising the carbon footprint. The extension and subsequent use, taking into account the existing building and a concept that maximises the use of daylight and natural ventilation, make the building an example of climate- and cycle-friendly construction with high-quality work, commercial and retail space.
Our concept is based on 3 criteria:
Maximum preservation of the existing building (taking into account the workplace guidelines for clear room heights up to the ceiling above the 1st floor) and maximum utilisation of secondary building materials
Daylight optimisation as an integral part of building planning
Use of wood as a resource-saving and CO2-storing material for the new building
The supporting structure of the existing building will be retained up to the ceiling above the first floor and removed in some areas to provide light to the basement and the inner courtyard area. This makes the basement part of the redensification strategy and, together with the ground floor, creates space for generous and open retail areas. In this concept, haascookzemmrich STUDIO2050 placed particular emphasis on maximising the amount of daylight on all floors along the façades. Entrance areas and shop areas are emphasised and highlighted by generous recesses in the plinth zone. The intersection of the Schiller and theatre passages plays an important role here. The actual centre of the Schlossgarten quarter is made particularly attractive by openly designed 2-storey expansions of the façade.
