haas cook zemmrich STUDIO2050 have collaborated with Gehl Architekten, Copenhagen, Transsolar KlimaEngineering, Stuttgart and Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, Überlingenfor the masterplanning of a large scale, mixed-use city quarter in the Hanseatic city of Rostock. The principle aim of the masterplan is the redevelopment of a long vacant, inner city site located close to the central train station. The main goal is to develop a vibrant mix of areas for education, science and technology to be contrasted by quieter interior areas with less traffic and noise reserved for residential use.
The areas devoted to education, science and technology are to accommodate buildings providing for various age groups; from pre-school through schools and colleges. It will also offer space for research and development such as institutes and “start-up companies” benefitting from the proximity to the University Campus on Albert Einstein Street.
Residential areas are to be created in the inner, quieter districts, based on the distance to the peripheral traffic noise and emission source. The construction methods, the plot area ratio and the limits in buildingmassing are to be specified in the further planning process. High density housing is assumed due to its central location near the central station.
The residential areas will provide dwelling opportunities and offer a choice of diversified housing to other target groups such as students, considering the proximity to the University of Rostock and future educational institutions around.
