Together with the renovated existing building the new youth hostel will have an important presence on Winthirplatz. The new ensemble draws on the motif of the classical townhouse with a distinctly playful roofscape. This also provides the fassade to Winthirplatz with a clear rhythm.Window reveals of varying depth together with the play of light and shadow on the fassade enriches the street.A generous courtyard filters past the main entrance to form a small forecourt opening onto Winthirplatz; thereby carefully connecting public and private realm.
The proposed structure offers variation in room size, which affords flexibility in use. These rooms are based upon a modular system. Both the bathrooms and bed niches are developed as part of an extensive pre-fabricated „room-in-room“ system. This allows for different constellations, which may be easily changed with beds that can be folded away. Materials and detailing are simple and robust. The concept also allows for 2-bed rooms to be replaced with 4/6-bed rooms, easily increasing the number of beds in the hostel without reducing spatial qualities.
