We are delighted to have won the architectural competition for the planned Frankfurt Conservation Centre (FCC) on the grounds of Frankfurt Zoo. The jury was impressed by the design's innovative, ecological and urban planning aspects.
In addition to the FCC office, several partner organisations are also set to move into the new building in order to strengthen existing collaborations and create new synergies. The new building will be constructed on the eastern edge of Frankfurt Zoo on an area of 1,448 square metres. With five floors and a possible penthouse floor, it will offer around 5,000 square metres of space for offices, conference and meeting areas, open workspaces, outdoor workplaces and facilities for exhibitions and interdisciplinary collaboration.
According to the jury's report, our design stands out in particular for its consistently sustainable approach. Wood and clay construction elements are planned, giving the building a resource-saving structure. A low-tech concept will ensure simple and energy-efficient building technology. This is complemented by photovoltaic elements, waste heat utilisation and a green, upstream shading system that enables climate-friendly glazing. A winter garden acts as a passive climate element, while outdoor work areas and façade elements are not only greened but also designed as ecological habitats – for birds and insects, for example. This makes the building itself a functional part of the nature conservation approach embodied by the FCC.
The submitted designs will be on public display at the Frankfurt City Planning Office until 13 March 2026.
