The Franklin Barracks in Mannheim is one of the largest conversion projects in Germany and, once completed, will provide house up to 8,000 residents. As the most immediately recognizable part of this large scale urban redevelopment four separate towers are planned in the distinctive form of letter-shaped buildings. The four letter-shaped buildings spell out the word H-O-M-E, making reference to the former use as a US military barracks. A complex mix of different housing typologies will ensure a vibrant, socially mixed urban quarter. haascookzemmrich STUDIO2050 has been appointed for the high-rise „H“.The high-rise „H“ is situated on the central axis, the Europe Allee, which serves as a gateway to the city district. The design is for a 48-meter-high residential building with a range of different sized rental apartments, supplemented by a kindergarten, retail units and community gardens. A number of two-storey lofts form a plinth, where they are complimented by exhibition spaces, workshops, and flexible work/living spaces, which serve to enliven this axis. The roof to the plinth provides for neighborhood gardens and communal meeting spaces for the residents. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2022.
